Taiho to Buy Tsukuba Research Institute from Banyu

Tokyo, August 3, 2009 — Taiho Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., and Banyu Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., announced today that they have reached an agreement on the purchase of Banyu's Tsukuba Research Institute (TRI) by Taiho. Under the agreement, TRI's ownership will transfer to Taiho on August 31, 2009.

Some TRI employees will join Taiho after the conclusion of the purchase. Taiho, which currently has research facilities in Saitama and Tokushima Prefectures, will now also conduct research and development of oncology products in Tsukuba, which is located in Ibaraki Prefecture.

As announced in October 2008, Banyu's basic research programs at TRI have already been transferred to other sites as part of Banyu's global initiative to balance basic research capacity in support of a sustainable pipeline of high-potential compounds. Banyu will continue to deliver innovative medicines and vaccines from the clinical development programs conducted by its Clinical Development Institute in Tokyo.
