Vision
Embracing the challenge of creating
new possibilities for people awaiting new medicines

High-speed screening test.
Taiho Pharmaceutical leverages the strong connections it has built with doctors and professors who are key opinion leaders to continually increase the quality and speed of its new drug research. In August 2009, the company established the Tsukuba Research Center, which conducts molecular targeted drug research, aiming to create a research system focused on trends in new medical treatment, including the individualized medical care that has been making progress in recent years. Tsukuba Research Center, Tokushima Research Center, and Clinical Development Center form a seamlessly connected research network.
Motivated by a vision of the smiling faces of patients who have overcome disease, Taiho Pharmaceutical's researchers and development staff are committed to pursuing the research and development of innovative new drugs.
Target Research Areas
Oncology
Taiho's UFT and TS-1 anticancer agents have grown to become mainstay products. The company has been conducting research and development of drugs that can reinforce the efficacy and safety of these agents and has been exploring entirely new types of anticancer drugs. Progress continues in the development of anticancer agents that inhibit enzymes needed for cancer cell proliferation, anticancer agents that inhibit DNA and RNA synthesis in cancer cells, and angiogenesis inhibitors that work to starve cancer cells by inhibiting the production of new blood vessels that would allow them to gain nutrients and oxygen (angiogenesis).
Allergy / Immunology
Leveraging its findings and expertise accumulated during the development of IPD, which exerts an antiallergic effect by inhibiting Th2 cytokine production, the company is beginning development of antiallergic drugs with new mechanisms of action.
Urology
Through the development of BUP-4, which helps to alleviate urinary incontinence and frequency through an anticholinergic effect, the company accumulated a store of findings and expertise including an understanding of physiological functions such as direct effects on bladder smooth muscle cells. Taking advantage of this experience, Taiho is proceeding with research and development in areas such as new types of treatments for urinary incontinence and frequency.
