Social and Community Engagement Activities

  • 17 PARTNERSHIPS FOR THE GOALS

Taiho Pharmaceutical places great importance on building connections with society and local communities. We engage in a wide range of social and community contribution activities, including supporting employee volunteer initiatives and community environmental education programs.

Social Contribution Activities

Implementing the TABLE FOR TWO Program in Employee Cafeterias

The TABLE FOR TWO (TFT) program is a social contribution initiative based on the concept of “sharing a meal across time and space.” It aims to simultaneously address hunger and malnutrition in developing countries as well as obesity in developed countries. Taiho Pharmaceutical began offering the TFT program at its Tokushima Plant's employee cafeteria in June 2019 and expanded it to the employee cafeteria in the Tsukuba Research Center in October of that same year. When employees purchase TFT-designated menu items, 10 yen is donated from the employee and an additional 10 yen is matched by the company, for a total of 20 yen per meal. These donations are made through the certified non-profit organization TABLE FOR TWO and are used to provide school meals for children in developing countries.

  • In recognition of our support in 2024, Taiho Pharmaceutical was certified as a “Gold Partner” by TABLE FOR TWO and received a letter of appreciation.

Pink Ribbon Activities

Taiho Pharmaceutical supports Pink Ribbon activities to promote awareness of breast cancer, encourage accurate understanding, and advocate for early screening. At the Kitajima Plant, we hold annual events coinciding with Pink Ribbon Day on October 1. These include our traditional, pink-lit illumination of the water treatment facility and a charity sale of Japanese sweet bun called melon bread—featuring handmade Pink Ribbon logos crafted by our Kitajima employees. Through these activities, we strive to raise awareness of Pink Ribbon efforts both within and outside our company. Taiho Pharmaceutical remains committed to supporting Pink Ribbon activities so that patients and their loved ones can continue to live each day with a smile.

Public Seminars for Citizens

Taiho Pharmaceutical hosts public seminars for patients, their families, and the public. These seminars focus on useful topics such as cancer, skin diseases, and treatment options. Our goal is to promote accurate understanding of diseases and treatments among a wider audience and to help address health-related social issues.

Support for Cancer Research and Related Activities

  • The 18th Research Grant Award Ceremony

Taiho Pharmaceutical makes annual donations to the Kobayashi Foundation for Cancer Research, a public interest incorporated foundation.
Established in 2006, the Kobayashi Foundation for Cancer Research provides awards for innovative research on cancer elucidation and drug therapies, research grants for pioneering studies, recognitions for outstanding social activities in the field of cancer treatment, and support for human resource development through the dissemination of the latest academic information. Through these initiatives, the foundation aims to advance academic and scientific progress in the field, contributing to improved outcomes and advancements in cancer treatment. The foundation was certified as a public interest incorporated foundation in November 2009 and merged with the Osaka Cancer Research Foundation in April 2015.
The foundation conducts a variety of grant and award programs to foster outstanding researchers and healthcare professionals in the field of oncology in Japan and throughout Asia.

Support for Environmental Education

Adopt Eco-School

Taiho Pharmaceutical, together with the other Otsuka group companies Otsuka Pharmaceutical and Otsuka Chemical, has continued to support environmental education initiatives since fiscal 2008 by entering into agreements with local elementary, junior high, and high schools in Tokushima Prefecture, under the coordination of the Tokushima Prefectural Government. This initiative, called “Environmental Capital Adopt Eco-School,” involves the three group companies acting as “foster parents” and the local schools as “adoptees,” and supports environmental learning activities. The term “adopt” reflects the idea of group companies nurturing local schools through these activities. Since fiscal 2023, we have also supported activities such as outreach programs at Tokushima Commercial High School, focusing on “environmentally conscious, sustainable product development” in line with the SDGs and ethical consumption.

We hope that the Adopt Eco-School initiative will inspire students to take notice of the environmental issues close to their everyday lives.

Community Engagement Activities

Online Lecture for Junior High School Students on the SDGs, Cancer, and Drug Discovery

In July 2021, leveraging our connection to Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture, where our research center for drug discovery is located, we conducted an online lecture for students at Joso Gakuin Junior High School in Ibaraki. At Joso Gakuin Junior High School, the entire school engages in inquiry-based learning under the theme of “The SDGs and Regional Revitalization.”
As part of this program, we delivered a lecture to 74 students (grades 7-9) who are interested in the medical field, covering topics such as our company’s sustainability initiatives, drug discovery (including cancer and immunological diseases), and our activities through corporate venture capital. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the event was held online. We also shared a short video of our TsukubaResearch Center, allowing students to get a feel for the atmosphere of our research facility.

Patient Support

Volunteer employees from Taiho Pharmaceutical participated in the “Beads of Courage with Messages” program operated by Shine On! Kids, a certified non-profit organization. Shine On! Kids is dedicated to its mission of “bringing smiles to children in the hospital” by supporting hospitalized and recuperating children and their families with evidence-based psychosocial support programs designed to help them maintain hope and joy during difficult times. “Beads of Courage” is an art-based therapy program in which hospitalized children string together beads as symbols of their treatment journey and acts of courage. Especially large beads are awarded to children as “milestones” when they overcome particularly challenging times during their treatment. Participants in the program wrote heartfelt messages on cards to accompany these special beads, expressing their support and encouragement to the children.

Participation in the “READYFOR × borasapo Disaster Relief Fund”

Since 2021, Taiho Pharmaceutical has participated as a corporate partner in the “READYFOR × borasapo Disaster Relief Fund.” When a disaster occurs (such as when Japan’s Disaster Relief Act is invoked), the fund is promptly launched and utilizes crowdfunding to quickly raise financial support. Our participation in this initiative enables us to make swift donations to NPOs and other organizations supporting disaster recovery efforts.

Through this fund, we participated in an emergency grant program in response to the heavy rain that hit Western Japan in August 2021. Donations were made by combining contributions from employees, proceeds from charity sales held at our Kitajima and Tokushima Plants, and matching gifts from the company.

Support for Areas Affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake

In response to the Noto Peninsula Earthquake that occurred in January 2024, we implemented a matching gift initiative utilizing the crowdfunding platform provided by READYFOR, Inc.
For every donation made by employees, the company contributed an equivalent amount, and the combined donations were given to support organizations aiding affected regions.

We would like to extend our heartfelt sympathies to everyone impacted by the disaster.

Participation in the Tokushima Forest-Building Collaborative

Since fiscal 2010, Tokushima Plant has entered into a partnership agreement each year with Tokushima Prefecture and the Tokushima Forestry Promotion Organization for the Tokushima Forest-Building Collaborative, seeking to contribute to forest development initiatives within the prefecture. Based on this agreement, activities such as thinning and planting are conducted to maintain and preserve these forests. This helps increase the amount of CO₂ absorbed by the forests, helping to address global warming. Every year, employees and their families also participate in thinning and planting experiences. Starting in 2019, together with nine other companies of the Otsuka group operating in Tokushima Prefecture, we signed a partnership agreement for the Tokushima Forest-Building Collaborative, expanding the initiative and forming the FAB* Tokushima Forest-Building Project.
As a member of the host company group, Taiho Pharmaceutical will continue supporting forest development initiatives in the western region of Tokushima Prefecture until fiscal 2028.
In 2023, under the guidance of experts, we engaged in sapling planting, woodworking crafts, and shiitake mushroom cultivation using logs.

*FAB stands for Forest Activity Base. It is a large-scale base for forest activities, focusing on systematic forest maintenance and the promotion of forest creation activities, led by host companies.

Preservation of Awa Odori Traditional Dance Culture

  • Tiovita-Ren

As a company founded in Tokushima, we are committed to preserving the traditional dance culture of Awa Odori, which boasts a history of 400 years. Held throughout Tokushima Prefecture during the Obon period in August, Awa Odori events attract about one million visitors from across Japan, creating a vibrant atmosphere. In Awa Odori, each dance group is called a “ren.”
Since 1975, Taiho Pharmaceutical has been participating in Awa Odori as the “Tiovita-Ren” a group made up of our employees, under the motto of “Enriched by Smiles.”

Collecting Various Items to Support Worthy Causes

Collection of Used Stamps

Expressing our support for the “Sutenai Seikatsu (waste-free life)” initiative, a program run by the specified nonprofit corporation Shapla Neer, we encourage participation at each factory and department. “Sutenai Seikatsu” is a new lifestyle that promotes international cooperation by utilizing unwanted items instead of throwing them away. At Taiho Pharmaceutical, we collect used stamps, trim them to the specified size, and send them to the organization.

Collection of Used Contact Lens Cases

Taiho Pharmaceutical participates in the Eye City Eco Project, promoted by the Eye Care Division of HOYA Corporation. The Eye City Eco Project is an activity in which Eye City, a contact lens specialty store operated by HOYA Corporation, collects and recycles used disposable contact lens cases. By recycling these cases, CO2 emissions can be reduced, and the funds obtained from the recycled materials are donated to the Japan Eye Bank Association. Since 2018, all employees have been encouraged to participate in this collection initiative.

Collection of Tape Cores

Since 2021, Taiho Pharmaceutical has participated in the Nichiban Maki-shin ECO Project. This project involves sending used tape cores from adhesive products such as cellophane tape to the project office. The collected tape cores are then purchased by wastepaper recycling companies and recycled into cardboard. Furthermore, the proceeds from this recycling, along with support funds from Nichiban, are used to support environmental conservation activities, such as mangrove planting.
