The EcoVadis sustainability assessment provides a detailed analysis of companies’ sustainability initiatives across four themes — Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement — using proprietary criteria grounded in international standards.
The following initiatives by Taiho Pharmaceutical in each of these areas were recognized in the assessment.
- Environment
The Otsuka group, which includes Taiho Pharmaceutical, has established an environmental policy and set quantitative targets for each of its priority issues, including Carbon Neutrality, Circular Economy, Water Neutrality, and Biodiversity. The group is further strengthening its environmental management by participating in international initiatives such as the Science Based Targets (SBT) and RE100. To meet these targets, Taiho Pharmaceutical installed a large-scale solar power generation facility at its Kitajima Factory in February 2025 and is pursuing specific measures such as the use of renewable energy, advanced wastewater treatment, and waste reduction and recycling. - Labor & Human Rights
Taiho Pharmaceutical has put in place a systematic framework of policies covering occupational health and safety, prevention of discrimination, career development, and working conditions, and works to ensure their effectiveness by employing quantitative targets and related programs. By practicing employee health management, skills development, and the promotion of diverse and flexible ways of working, the company is continuously building a sustainable workplace environment. - Ethics
Taiho Pharmaceutical has established comprehensive policies addressing anti-corruption, information security, conflicts of interest, and other ethical issues and has built mechanisms for whistleblowing and human rights due diligence. By carrying out risk assessments, employee training, and promoting the activities of its Human Rights Task Force, the company aims to enhance the transparency and credibility of its business operations. - Sustainable Procurement
Taiho Pharmaceutical has established a procurement policy that includes consideration of both environmental and social factors. It promotes sustainability across its entire supply chain through supplier assessments, risk analysis, audits, and related actions. In addition, by engaging in dialogue and collaboration with suppliers and jointly promoting continuous improvement and capability development, the company is working to strengthen its procurement system.
Masayoshi Fukuoka, Executive Officer and General Manager of Corporate Planning Department of Taiho Pharmaceutical commented: “Guided by our corporate philosophy — ‘We strive to improve human health and contribute to a society enriched by smiles’ — we have engaged with people’s health through our pharmaceutical business, centered on anticancer drugs, and our consumer healthcare business. For us, sustainability is integral to our integrity as a company and is essential in realizing our corporate philosophy. We position responsible business conduct across the environment, labor & human rights, ethics, and the entire supply chain as a key management priority, and we are advancing our efforts accordingly. We recognize this silver medal in the EcoVadis sustainability assessment as confirmation that our sustainability initiatives meet a certain level when evaluated against global benchmarks. At the same time, this assessment is not a goal but a milestone on the path of continuous improvement. We will further deepen our efforts across the entire value chain so that we may continue to be a company trusted by society and our business partners.”
