Taiho Pharmaceutical Installs New Solar Power Generation Facility at Tsukuba Drug Discovery Site to Accelerate Carbon Neutrality Initiatives

Taiho Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. announced today that it has installed a new solar power generation facility at its Tsukuba Research Center in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, the company’s drug discovery site. The facility went into operation in October 2026 and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately185 tons per year. *1

This initiative is one of Taiho Pharmaceutical’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality under “Promote Positive Impact on Global Environment,” one of Otsuka group’s material issues, which Taiho Pharmaceutical is a member.

Taiho Pharmaceutical has already adopted carbon-neutral electricity at all of its plants and research centers and has also been promoting the use of Green Power Certificates*2 across all of its office divisions. In 2025, the company also installed a solar power generation facility at its Kitajima Plant. With the new facility announced today, the company aims to expand its use of self-generated renewable energy. Taiho Pharmaceutical will continue working to contribute to carbon neutrality.

Operations commence October 2026
Number of solar panels 1,278 panels
Generation capacity 350 kW
Estimated annual power generation Approx. 500 MWh
Estimated annual CO2 emissions reduction Approx. 185 tons

Main Initiatives for CO2 Emissions Reduction

  • Adoption of carbon-neutral electricity at all plants and research centers in Japan
Since September 2021, all power purchased for production activities in Japan has been carbon-neutral electricity generated from renewable energy sources.
  • Utilization of Green Power Certificates
Since fiscal 2020, all office divisions of the five Otsuka group companies,*3 including Taiho Pharmaceutical, have been purchasing Green Power Certificates, marking a transition of their entire annual electricity consumption (12.5 million kWh) to green energy.
  • Launch of a solar power generation facility at Kitajima Plant
A new solar power generation facility was installed on the grounds of Taiho Pharmaceutical’s Kitajima Plant and went into operation in February 2025. The facility is expected to generate approximately 4,400 MWh annually, resulting in an estimated reduction of 1,880 tons of CO₂ emissions per year. *1*4

Otsuka Group Initiatives for Carbon Neutrality

Under the 2050 Environmental Vision “Net Zero,” the Otsuka group is committed to reducing the total environmental impact of its business activities to zero. “Promote Positive Impact on Global Environment” is identified as one of the group’s material issues. To address this, the group has established medium-term goals in four key areas: Carbon Neutrality, Circular Economy, Water Neutrality, and Biodiversity. For carbon neutrality, the Otsuka group aims to achieve a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions by 2028 compared to 2017 levels, while also ensuring that 20% of its energy usage consists of self-generated renewable energy.

Taiho Pharmaceutical is working hard to achieve these medium-term goals by building solar generation facilities, adopting carbon-neutral electricity and other renewable energy sources, and optimizing energy efficiency in its operations.

*1 Estimated CO₂ emissions reduction compared with the use of conventional grid electricity.
*2 A mechanism whereby certificate issuers obtain third-party certification of the environmental added value of electricity generated from renewable energy sources (green power) and then trade that value in the form of Green Power Certificates.
*3 Taiho Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., Otsuka Pharmaceutical Factory, Inc., Otsuka Chemical Co., Ltd., and Otsuka Foods Co., Ltd.
*4 Calculated using alternative values (based on emission factors by electricity providers for submission in FY2024)
*5 Self-generated renewable energy is a proprietary indicator established by the Otsuka group to pursue “additionality” and contribute to the expansion of renewable energy across society. In addition to renewable energy generated by the group’s own facilities, it also includes renewable energy newly created through collaboration with power generation companies and other partners.
